So Many Greek Cruises, So Little Time

There is a famous tale told by Jean Buridan, a medieval logician and philosopher, about a donkey who starved to death even though he had three full bales of hay before him.

The philosopher gives many lessons in logic as he tells the tale, but the story’s moral is that, because the poor beast could not choose among three succulent bales of hay, he ended up with nothing.

Selecting which cruise to take on the Greek islands can be daunting, but not if you use the services of a Greek travel agency, specializing in travel to Greece and Turkey. Unlike the bewildered donkey who could not choose from tempting options, you will have knowledgeable guidance enabling you to select the cruise perfect for you.

Matt Barrett, who founded the very popular and comprehensive website, www.greektravel.com, says he attended a travel show in New York and talked with a cruise agent from Greece. The agent complained about the mega ships from countries other than Greece being “totally inappropriate” for the small harbors on most of the Greek islands. “These islands cannot handle thousands of people disembarking,” he said.

The agent recommended using a Greek Cruise company, explaining “They know the territory and while the boats are not small, they are not so big that getting on and off is a problem. They carry no more than 800 passengers.” He said you will always get expert advice and usually get discounted rates.

As examples of economical cruise packages, Mr. Barrett recommends contacting Fantasy Travel. This agency has a variety of offerings, including an eight-day package starting at 595 euros that includes a four-day cruise to Mykonos, Kusadasi, Patmos, Crete, and Santorini, plus Athens, Delphi, and Meteora. This is being promoted as an excellent introduction to the Greek islands.

Another option for those with limited time in Athens is the one-day Saronic Gulf Cruise to the nearby islands of Aegina, Poros, and Hydra. This cruise is offered year round.
